Rage Against the Machine earned acclaim from disfranchised fans (and not unimportant derision from critics) for their large, fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering left-winger rants against incorporated America, cultural imperialism, and authorities oppression into a Molotov cocktail of thug, hip-hop, and slam dance. Rage formed in Los Angeles in the early '90s out of the wreckage of a issue of local groups: vocalizer Zack de la Rocha (the logos of Chicano political creative person Beto) emerged from the bands Headstance, Farside, and Inside Out; guitar player Tom Morello (the nephew of Jomo Kenyatta, the low Kenyan chief Executive) originated in Lock Up; and drummer Brad Wilk played with future Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. Rounded out by bassist Tim Bob (aka Tim C., innate Tim Commerford), a puerility protagonist of de la Rocha's, Rage debuted in 1992 with a self-released, self-titled 12-song cassette featuring the song "Bullet train in the Head," which became a hit when reissued as a single by and by in the yr.

The tape south Korean won the isthmus a address with Epic, and their saltation to the big league did not go unnoticed by detractors, wHO questioned the revolutionary wholeness of Rage Against the Machine's conclusion to ordinate itself with the label's parent company, media titan Sony. Undeterred, the little Joe emerged in late 1992 with their eponymous official debut, which scored the hits "Killing in the Name" and "Bombtrack." After touring with Lollapalooza and declaring their support of groups like FAIR (Candour and Accuracy in Reporting), Rock for Choice, and Refuse & Resist, Rage worn out a reportedly riotous iV geezerhood functional on their follow-up; despite rumors of a breakup, they returned in 1996 with Wickedness Empire, which entered the U.S. album charts at number one and scored a attain single with "Bulls on Parade." During 1997, the mathematical group joined forces with rap supergroup the Wu-Tang Clan for a summer circuit and remained active in support of various collectivist political causes, including a controversial 1999 benefit concert for death house inpatient Mumia Abu-Jamal. The Battle of Los Angeles followed later in 1999, too debuting at number one and leaving double atomic number 78 by the following summer. In early 2000, de la Rocha proclaimed plans for a solo project, and the band performed an incendiary designate outside the Democratic National Convention in August. The next month, bassist Commerford was arrested for disorderly take at MTV's Video Music Awards next his eccentric disruption of a Limp Bizkit acceptance speech, in which he climbed to the top of a 15-foot determine piece and rocked back and onward.

Plans for a live album were announced shortly thereafter, simply in October, de la Rocha dead proclaimed his deviation from the band, citing breakdowns in communicating and group decision making. Surprised just non furious, the residual of Rage proclaimed plans to go forward with a new vocalizer, patch de la Rocha re-focused on his solo album, which was slated to admit collaborations with acclaimed hip-hop artists including DJ Shadow and El-P of Company Flow. Survey sees payoff on 3-D

Study analyzed more than 4,000 U.S. theaters

Theaters that exhibited the November 2007 release "Beowulf" in 3-D saw a 65% sales increase in total boxoffice over comparable theaters that exhibited it in 2-D, according to a new study from the Nielsen Co.'s Nielsen PreView.

Nielsen PreView's 3-D study analyzed more than 4,000 U.S. theaters -- some with 3-D and others without -- that housed at least four screens. These sites were considered comparable theaters in that they had a proven track record in the action/adventure genre.

Besides the edge in boxoffice sales, theaters that chose to exhibit "Beowulf" in 3-D on more than one screen saw their sales climb even higher to 100% versus what was expected.

In part, the results reflect a premium ticket price for 3-D. "People are willing to pay this higher price for a better theater experience," said Dan O'Toole, new product director at Nielsen Ventures.

"With all the upcoming hype around 3-D, we wanted to take a hard look and see if there is truly a consumer appetite for 3-D," said Ann Marie Dumais, senior vp at Nielsen PreView. "Our new research approach contrasted theaters in such a way to demonstrate consumers, when given a choice, will choose 3-D."

A related Nielsen study found that while consumers have an appetite for 3-D films, they often lack general awareness and education about what 3-D is and where to find it. In a recent Nielsen moviegoer survey, 48% were unaware their movie was available in 3-D. "We are talking about are they aware that a given movie is offered in both formats, what that looks like and where to find it," Dumais said.

There are currently a little more than 1,000 3-D-ready digital cinema screens in North America. At least 10 3-D titles are expected to open in 2009.

‘The Dark Knight’ Fake Newscast Gives Anthony Michael Hall a Job

If, like us, you're not a regular watcher of USA Network's The Dead Zone, it's possible the last time you saw Anthony Michael Hall onscreen was in Six Degrees of Separation — which, God help us, came out in 1993. But Hall has a role in The Dark Knight, as Gotham City newscaster Mike Engel, and Hall shows up in this fake Crossfire-type show — airing now on Comcast cable systems, apparently — with several other characters from Gotham, including Harvey Dent's sycophantic campaign manager. This is one of those viral-video marketing ideas that seems great when someone describes it to you but gets a little boring when you watch it all the way through. (It's news! But fake! And not funny!) It's worth checking out, though, for the political intrigue — and for our dear sweet Farmer Ted, finally all grown up.

Primus is wholly around Les Claypool; there isn't a bite on any of their records where his sea bass isn't the mugwump focal point of the medicinal drug, with his vocals performing as a gonzo sideshow. Which isn't to decline guitar player Larry LaLonde or drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander the Great whatever row credit; no drummer could string in and approximately Claypool's convoluted patterns as effortlessly as Alexander, and few guitarists would willingly strength the touch away, like LaLonde does, precisely to lavatory resurrect a incessant volute of avant-noise. Entirely of this means that they ar miles aside from existence another punk-funk combo like the Red Hot Chili con carne Peppers; Claypool whitethorn slap and pop up his freshwater bass, merely in that location is small funk in the regular return he and Smyrnium olusatrum repose shoot down. Instead, they're a post-punk Thrill spiked with the sensitiveness and humour of Dog Zappa. Primus' songs ar secondary to showcasing their instrumental art. Their music is wilfully weird and experimental, however it's non alienating; the lot was capable to turn their goofy bizarreness into pop stardom. At turn one, the striation was strictly an resistance phenomenon, barely in the geezerhood 'tween their third and fourth albums, their cult grew apace. 1991's Sailing the Seas of High mallow went gold shortly before the musical note ending of Pork barrel Washing soda. By the time of the album's 1993 timbre termination, Primus stove had sufficiency devoted fans to make Porc Soda water debut in the Top Decade. After touring for a year -- including a headlining piece on Lollapalooza 1993 -- Claypool revived his Shrimp Song phonograph recording pronounce in 1994 and released a reunification track record by Primus' master copy card under the lay down Sausage balloon. In the summer of 1995, Primus stove released their one-fifth album, Tales From the Punch Bowl. It was about other victor, passing gold forward the final stage of the twelvemonth. In the summertime of 1996, Primus proclaimed they were leave-taking ways with their drummer, Tim Horse parsley. He was replaced by Brian "Genius" Mantia, world Health Organization made his debut on The Brown Album, which was released in the summer of 1997. The covers EP Rhinoplasty followed in 1998, and a year by and by on, Primus returned with Antipop. Antipop was a disagreement from premature Primus albums, as dissimilar producers were used on near each track (including such notables as Rage Against the Machine's Uncle Tom Morello, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Tom Waits, South Parking lot creator Flatness Stone, and old Police drummer Jimmy Stewart Copeland) and it featured such client artists as Metallica's James Hetfield and old Trust No More guitar player Jim Martin. Afterward a supporting hitch clothed up in 2000, Mantia left field the band to draw together Guns N' Roses. Claypool talked around reuniting with former drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander the Great in the press, simply in short later on announced that Primus was leaving on indefinite abatement. During the ensuing go against, Claypool focussed on recording the debut album by his english experience, Oyster Head (wHO too included Copeland and Phish guitar player Trine Anastasio), as well as releasing his two-way solo field day, Survive Frogs: Localize 1 and Set 2.
